How Workout Environments Shape Our Expectations and Beliefs

In the fitness room of the senior living community where I teach, I've observed a common setup: a treadmill, a stationary bike, hand weights ranging from 2 to 5 pounds, and, of course, chairs. But what message does this environment convey to those who step inside?

It seems to imply, "We believe you're only capable of handling 5-pound weights and require assistance from a chair." While this may be accurate for some residents initially, with the right guidance and training, their potential extends far beyond these limitations.

As I glance around such spaces and consider the statistics revealing the prevalence of older adults in senior living facilities experiencing sarcopenia, I can't help but connect the dots. Why do we often settle for less and not challenge our seniors more?

By offering classes filled with chairs, light bands, and small dumbbells, we unintentionally communicate our limited expectations for their exercise capabilities. It's time to raise the bar, and show our belief in their potential.

It can start by transforming the workout spaces into empowering environments with heavier weights, challenging workouts and have it backed by dedicated and educated professionals that can foster trusting relationships and level up the training for older adults. It's about shifting perspectives, advocating for higher standards, and, most importantly, empowering our seniors to achieve more than they might think possible.
