From the AGEnts of Movement Learning Lab: Building Belonging Through Movement with guest contributors David Leventhal, the founder of Dance for PD and Gill Erskine and Andrew Telfer, founders of WildStrong. We discuss how community is intentionally designed—not a byproduct—by shifting from a coach-led “service” to participant ownership, where people contribute, take roles, and feel their presence matters. They note social isolation’s health impact, critique fitness-only lenses and siloed funding, and highlight practical tools like questions, constraints-led games, and balancing structure with co-creation to reduce fear of “doing it wrong” and increase joy and participation. This episode is from the AGEnts of Movement Learning Lab From Exercise to Experience. The question we aim to answer is What if the goal isn’t just to deliver a great workout, but to create an experience people want to return to? I’m joined by wellness business consultant Jessica Maurer and functional training specialist Reuben Thickstun for a conversation about shifting from exercise delivery to experience design. We discuss why the most memorable movement experiences are often defined by how people feel when they leave—not just by what exercises they completed. We explore the role of environment, language, music, inclusive options, and intentional connection in creating spaces where everyone feels like they belong. The conversation also dives into common mistakes that impact participation and retention—from class descriptions that unintentionally discourage people, to modifications that can make participants feel different rather than included. Jessica and Reuben share insights on grassroots marketing, engaging families and caregivers, creating themed or charitable events, and adapting experiences for people living with cognitive changes. Movement is not just about what we do. It’s about how people feel, who they connect with, and what they believe is possible. Ron Blehm is a longtime physical therapist who left clinical practice to found EEI Physical Wellness Institute and focus on something he believes is often missing from healthcare: whole-person functional assessment. Ron challenges the diagnosis-driven, reimbursement-focused model of care that can leave important pieces of the puzzle overlooked. Things like gait speed, balance, endurance, cognition, sleep, nutrition—and how all of these factors work together to influence how we move and function. He also shares his experience working in a falls specialty clinic, and explains why he believes we shouldn’t wait until someone is falling repeatedly to start paying attention. We talk about his 30-point FAST—Functional Assessment Screening Tool—and some of the “blind spots” it can reveal, including proprioception and rapid strength. And Ron challenges one of our most common assumptions: is age itself really the risk factor, or is it what happens to our function as we age? Most importantly, this conversation asks us to rethink prevention. What could we do differently if we started assessing and developing balance, mobility, strength, and movement capacity in midlife—long before a fall becomes the reason we pay attention? I’m joined by coach and midlife transition expert, Dana Hilmer, who brings a deeply personal perspective to our conversation. Dana has experienced her own significant health setback—one that challenged her sense of identity and changed the way she thought about her future. We explore what it means to face a health setback and the emotional experience that comes when the person you thought you were—or the things you thought you could do—suddenly feel uncertain. We talk about the stories we tell ourselves during times of change, how we can hold space for grief while still making room for possibility, and what it looks like to build a new sense of identity when life doesn't go according to plan. This is a conversation about resilience, self-compassion, possibility, and learning to see yourself not only for where you are today, but for who you are becoming. Dr. Amy Bantham is founder of Move to Live More , an organization dedicated to building bridges between healthcare, the fitness industry, and community organizations to help more people live healthier, more active lives. Amy is the Past President of the Physical Activity Alliance, a certified health and wellness coach, personal trainer, and group fitness instructor, and holds a Doctor of Public Health from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. We explore how the language we use shapes beliefs about aging and movement, why phrases like "exercise keeps you young" can do more harm than good, and how we can shift the conversation from fear and decline to strength, confidence, and possibility. We also discuss what really keeps people coming back to movement programs. Spoiler alert: it's rarely the workout itself. It's the relationships, the laughter, and the sense of belonging. From simple ways to build social connection into your classes to rethinking how we talk about falls, strength, and confidence, this conversation provides practical ideas for movement leaders and anyone passionate about creating healthier communities. We address persistent ageism in wellness and senior living, including “bubble-wrapping” older adults with overly cautious programming, and emphasize using research and education to change assumptions about capability and improvement even into late life. Colin describes what an age-friendly culture looks like—autonomy, agency, inclusion, empathy, and community access for all ages—and shares future-focused insights on personalization, precision, genetics, technology, and closing the 12.4-year gap between lifespan and healthspan, stressing that HI—human intelligence and interconnection—remains central. I’m sharing the presentation I did for day one of the Advancing Resilience of Falls Prevention Summit hosted by the Wisconsin Institute for Healthy Aging and the Falls Free Wisconsin Coalition. I dive into a topic that often gets overlooked in fall prevention conversations: social disconnection. We explore how social frailty and isolation contributes to cognitive and physical decline, reduced confidence, fear of falling, and ultimately increased fall risk. I share research connecting social exclusion and loneliness to falls and discuss why movement professionals and community leaders need to think beyond physical assessments alone. Throughout the conversation, we explore how movement programs can become powerful social interventions by intentionally creating spaces of belonging, connection, encouragement, and shared experience. We discuss practical ways to build confidence, foster peer relationships, and help participants feel seen, supported, and valued within class environments. This episode highlights a project close to my heart: the Ability, Not Age paper — a collaborative effort by the Ability, Not Age Task Force, a team I brought together through what’s now known as Agents of Movement . Our goal was to challenge ageism in fitness and wellness by rethinking how we label and design programs for older adults. Too often, classes are defined by age — “Senior Fitness,” “Silver Yoga,” “Older Adult Strength” instead of by ability or interest. We wanted to flip that script and focus on what people can do and want from their movement experiences, regardless of their age. The result was the Ability, Not Age paper, portions of which were published by the American Society on Aging , soon to be published in the Journal on Active Aging . Our work also earned the Mather Institute Promising Practices Award , a recognition for innovative approaches to serving older adults. In this episode, you’ll hear from several of the writers who helped bring the paper to life. We’ll explore how the idea emerged, what it represents for the future of our field, and how we can all contribute to creating more inclusive, ability-centered movement spaces. This special episode is recording of our recent event, Connecting Physical Therapy with Community Fitness for Older Adults . This event featured an incredible panel of experts dedicated to helping older adults stay strong, active, and resilient long after being discharged from physical therapy. The panel included four specialized physical therapists—Lori DeShelter, Teresa Gingles, and Betsy Spieler, all recruited from the Institute of Clinical Excellence (ICE) Older Adult division—and returning guest Susan Frikken. Joining them was Linda Cantrill, a seasoned fall prevention specialist who collaborates closely with physical therapists to support clients in maintaining their mobility and preventing falls. You'll hear from the panelists about how they've successfully bridged the gap between clinical and community settings through collaboration, sharing real-life examples of what works and how we can all contribute to keeping older adults socially engaged and physically active. This event was inspired by a paper co-written by Jeff Musgrave, a past podcast guest and a faculty member of the ICE Older Adult courses titled “Transforming Lives with Group Fitness: Considerations for Rehabilitation Professionals. the panelists emphasize the importance of warm handoffs, proactive communication, and building trusting relationships between healthcare providers and fitness specialists. They share key initiatives and actionable strategies to connect the physical therapy and fitness worlds—all with the shared mission of helping older adults thrive. In this heartwarming episode as we delve into the profound power of movement and storytelling in the lives of elders. I’m interviewing Laura Treglia and Shawn Womack, two passionate dance instructors, who lead the Dancing Your Stories for Elders class at the Hillside Community Center in Colorado Springs. This innovative class provides a platform for older adults to express themselves, share their treasured stories, and reminisce through creative movement. Through a collaboration between Ormao Dance Company, Hillside Community Center, and Shawn Womack, this class has become a place of connection for the underserved older adult population in Colorado Springs. Funded by a generous grant from the Colorado Springs Health Foundation, Dancing Your Stories has not only empowered participants to express themselves through movement that has resulted in participants conducting performances across the city. After the isolating effects of the pandemic, this class has been instrumental in helping older adults re-engage socially and forge meaningful connections with one another. It's more than just a dance class; it's a space where memories are woven into movement, where creativity is nurtured, and where community thrives. Hear how lives have been touched and transformed by the class and discover the impact this initiative has had in fostering a sense of belonging among elders in Colorado Springs.
